Betty Lou Wilcox

Betty Lou Wilcox, 81, North Manchester, passed away on Aug. 13, 2018, at Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester.

She was born on Feb. 15, 1937, to Edson and Dorothy (Ludwig) Carroll in Huntington.

After graduating from Urbana High School in 1955, Betty graduated from St. Joseph Hospital of Nursing in 1958. She married the love of her life Ernest Wilcox Jr. on Aug. 23, 1958. Together, the Wilcox’s started out their new life together in Fort Sill, Okla. since Mr. Wilcox was in the Army at that time. If it wasn’t scrubbing for an O.R. Doctor, she would give 7-year-old boys and girls their weekly allergy shots or draw their blood in the lab and did it with commitment, compassion, and love.

Before retiring in 1990, she worked as an RN at the Wabash County Hospital then the Manchester Clinic. She was a farm wife and homemaker. She was Ernest’s farm hand – from running equipment, shelling corn, bailing hay, and caring for animals. As a member of the St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church. Church life was an important part of Betty Wilcox’s life. She helped with funeral dinners and taught Sunday school. She was also a part of the St. Robert Rosary Sodality. She was a Red Cross volunteer and an advocate for Right to Life. She believed in life from the point of conception. In her free time, Betty loved sewing clothes for Barbie’s. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

Betty Wilcox will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Ernest Wilcox, North Manchester; one son David (Traci) Wilcox, North Manchester; two daughters: Teresa (Dan) Flora, North Manchester; and Christine Marie (Robert) Warner, Sarasota, Fla.; one brother Robert (Ann) Carroll, North Manchester; eight grandchildren: Jaime (Chadd) Keaffaber, North Manchester; Lydia (Kenny) Young, Plainfield, Indiana, Maria (Greg) Whitaker, Clayton, Indiana, Amelia (Joe) Bradley, North Manchester, Indiana, Gabrielle Wilcox, North Manchester; Branden Wilcox, North Manchester; Felicity Warner, Boston, Mass.; Austen Warner, Sarasota, Fla.; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 17, at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 1203 State Road 114 East, North Manchester. Friends and family may call from 2-8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 16, at McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester. A Rosary service will begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16, at McKee Mortuary. Father Andrew Curry will officiate and burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Servia. Arrangements are in the care of McKee Mortuary, North Manchester.

Anna Faye Kindler

Anna Faye Kindler, 82, died at 1:04 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2018, at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home, Fort Wayne. Born Sept. 9, 1935, in Birmingham, Ala., she was the daughter of Melvin and Doris (Wiseman) DeVoe.

On Feb. 14, 1976, Anna married Maurice F. Kindler. The two were married for 35 years before he passed away May 28, 2011. She always loved being the wife of a veteran and often said “she was a career veteran’s wife.”  Being a mother, homemaker and a veteran’s wife was a full time job, but when she found time, she enjoyed crocheting and watching movies on TV.

The memory of Anna Faye Kindler will be carried on by one daughter, Tyna L. Raikes, Laketon; one brother, Rex (Clara) DeVoe, Rocky Top, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Autumn (Brett) Taylor, Wabash; Rhyan (Philip) Langhammer, Kokomo; and Corey Raikes, Laketon; four great-grandchildren and three nephews and one niece.  Anna Kindler is preceded in death by her husband, Maurice F. Kindler; parents, Melvin and Doris DeVoe and one brother, Max DeVoe.

A graveside service will be held at a later date.

Barbara A. Ihnen

Barbara A. Ihnen went to heaven on Aug. 17, 2018, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born April 2, 1957 in West Lafayette, to Gene and Lynn Ramsbey.

She graduated from Plymouth High School, Plymouth, in 1975. She married Max L. Ihnen on July 15, 1978. She graduated from Manchester College in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She received her Master’s Degree in elementary education from IPFW in Fort Wayne. She was an elementary school teacher in the Manchester Community Schools for 25 years. She then became an elementary principal at Pierceton Elementary School, Metro North Elementary School, and retired as a principal at Perry High Elementary in June 2017.

She loved her family with all her heart and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She so enjoyed her time spent with her grandchildren.

She had a special love for children and touched the lives of many over the years. She truly cared about her students, while in her classroom and beyond.

She enjoyed nature, traveling and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo.

Barbara will be remembered by her husband, Max Ihnen, Fort Wayne; one son Matt (Lauren Koegler) Ihnen, Milwaukee, Wisc.; two daughters: Andrea (Brock) Shultz, Avilla; and Amy Ihnen, Indianapolis; her parents, Gene and Lynn Ramsbey, North Manchester; two brothers, Mark (Mai Nguyen) Ramsbey, Sunnyvale, Calif.; and Paul (Rayelene) Ramsbey, Pipestone, Minn.; two sisters: Diane Quance, Warsaw; and Dawn (Scott) Helm, Elkhart; and three grandchildren Bryce, Maci, and Lane Shultz.

She was preceded in death by one son, Kyle Ihnen.

Services for Barbara Ihnen will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 24,at First Brethren Church, 407 N. Sycamore Street, North Manchester. Friends and family may call from 3-8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 23, at McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester. Pastor Kurt Stout will officiate the service. Ben Frank Music, 88, North Manchester, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones at 11:06 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018.

He was born Nov. 14, 1929, in Bonanza, Ky. to George and Hattie (England) Music.

He worked many years for Wabash County State Highway Department, retiring in 1990.

He is survived by his beautiful wife, Mary Belle (Barrett) Music that he cherished of 47 years of marriage. Daughters: Kathy (Oscar) Dingess, North Manchester; Connie (Mark) Logsdon, North Manchester; sons: Don Skeens (Tracy Eubank), North Manchester; Jack (Carrie) Skeens, Valparaiso; 20 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; a sister Helen Yentes, North Manchester.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents, three brothers, three sisters, and a great-granddaughter. He will be deeply missed by many friends and his loved ones.

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 27, at McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester, Friends and family may call from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. at McKee Mortuary. Jeanette M. Dziabis R.N.

Jeanette M. Dziabis R.N., 86, North Manchester, passed away at 5:45 a.m. Aug. 27, 2018, at her residence with her husband of 60 years by her side.

One of four children, she was born Feb. 6, 1932, to Hollis W. and Vivian Devota (McCarty) Pickett in Bakers Corner.

She received her Registered Nurse’s degree at Indianapolis Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, and B.S. Degree in Nursing Education from Indiana University. She was an instructor of Medical Surgical Nursing at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. A member of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, the Rosary Sodality and served as a Eucharistic minister, faith was a cornerstone in her life. Not only was faith important to her but she also was a C.C.D. instructor at the church.

Jeanette Dziabis is survived by her husband Marvin Dziabis M.D., North Manchester, to whom she married on June 28, 1958; four sons: Steven P. Dziabis, M.D., Atlanta, Ga.; David M. Dziabis, New York City, N.Y.; Stanley E. (Jennifer), Dziabis, Columbia City; and Gary A. (Patricia) Dziabis, Chicago, Ill.; one daughter, Lisa M. (Michel) Dziabis Calache, Marion; one brother, Ronald (Janice) Pickett, Bakers Corner; one sister, Deanna (Mike) Pickett Forrest, Sterling Heights, Mich.; one sister-in-law, Mary Lou Pickett;  eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother Joseph W. Pickett, and one daughter-in-law Kimberly Dziabis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 31, at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 1203 State Road 114 East, North Manchester, IN 46962. Father Andrew Curry and Father Bernard Ramenaden will officiate.  Entombment will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester. Betty Gaerte, 94, North Manchester, died Aug. 28, 2018, at Parkview Huntington Hospital at 3:59 a.m. She was born Sept. 14, 1923, in Wabash, to Ernest and Lora (Alberson) Kilander. On April 9, 1941, she married Herbert Gaerte Sr. He passed away Feb. 21, 2002.

As a young woman, she was an active farm wife, working alongside her husband while raising five children. In later years, she lovingly cared for her husband at home and as he spent his last years in Peabody Retirement Community. She enjoyed doing crafts, sewing and was an avid reader. She worked hard all her life, even caring for her own yard until the last year of her life.

Betty is remembered by one son Joel D. (Gaye) Gaerte, North Manchester; three daughters: Georgianna Hileman, North Manchester; Trudy (Jim) Rule, North Manchester; Sherian (Rod) Hicks, Colorado Springs, Colo.; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; and eleven great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, one son Herbert Gaerte Jr., two grandchildren, and one son-in-law Michael H. Hileman.

Services for Betty Gaerte will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 1, at McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester. Garl P. Young

Garl P. “Pete” Young, 95, North Manchester, died at 1 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, at Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester.  He was born July 4, 1923, in Wabash County, to Otto P. and Mabel E. (Wall) Young.

Garl “Pete” married Veradawn Bashore on July 15, 1945. She passed away May 16, 1996. Spending most of his life in North Manchester, he moved to Warsaw in 1967 then moving back to North Manchester in 2003. he had a passion for motorcycles and was an avid outdoors-man including his love for fishing. Always working with his hands, he built birdhouses and always making little improvements to his home. His positive energy energy and never having a negative bone in his body was evident to all who knew him. He loved his grandson and great-grandchildren. From 1955-1967, Mr. Young was employed with the former Pyramid Oil Co. in North Manchester and was employed with Kosciusko County Highway Department from 1967 until his retirement in 1988.

Pete Young is survived by his son Lennie Lee (Sandra) Young, Warsaw; one grandchild Adam (Latasha) Young, Claypool; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers Paul Young and Howard Young, three sisters Agatha Hippensteel, Wanda Parr, and Juanita Bechtold.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10, at Peabody Chapel, 400 West 7th Street, North Manchester, IN 46962. Friends and family may call from noon-2 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10, at Peabody Chapel. Pastor David Crowley will officiate and burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Servia.

Verva McCorkle

Verva McCorkle, 70, North Manchester, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018, at Wellbrooke of Wabash.

One of nine children born to Ershel and Mable (Boggs) Calhoun, she was born Nov. 17, 1947, in Prestonsburg, Ky. She spent much of her adult life in Warsaw, recently moving to North Manchester to be closer to her daughter and grandson.

She began working at age 15 as a nurse’s aide near her home in Kentucky. In Indiana, she worked cleaning laundry for several commercial laundry businesses and spent ten years with Warsaw Walmart. She was married on June 26, 1987, to Robert McCorkle who preceded her in passing on Sept. 8, 2000.

Outside of work she enjoyed shopping and tending to her flower gardens. She collected Precious Moments figurines and was always sure to enjoy desert – she loved sweets.

She had a heart for helping people; she was a loving neighbor and a giving person. She was a woman of faith and loved the Lord. She was a member of Harvest Community Church in Pierceton. Finding Christ made her even more kindhearted, a trend that continued with the birth of her grandson, Mason.

In addition to her daughter, Shayla (Christopher) Nordmann, North Manchester; and their son, Mason, Mrs. McCorkle is survived by six siblings, sisters: Verline Nichols, Prestonsburg, Ky.; Birdie (Raymond) Wolfe, Pierceton; Pat Whitaker, Warsaw; and Jessica Calhoun, Glasgow, Ky.; and brothers: John (Teresa) Calhoun and Lester Calhoun, both of Warsaw. She was preceded in passing by her husband, Robert; son, Donald Slone; two brothers, Taylor and Tom Calhoun and sister, Laura Shepherd.

Her life will be celebrated by her family and friends at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 13, in Titus Funeral Home, 2000 East Sheridan Street, Warsaw. Pastor Glenn Hall will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Funeral Home.

Doris B. Snell

Doris B. Snell, 92, North Manchester, passed away at 7:55 a.m. on Sept. 10, 2018, at Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester. Daughter of Albert F. and Mary A. (Hollinger) Bowers, she was born on April 28, 1926, in Reading, Penn. and was the youngest of three children.

In 1944 she graduated from Wilson High School in West Lawn, Penn. She met E. DeWayne Snell on a blind date while he was stationed at Indiantown Gap, Penn. They were married on July 14, 1945. The two were married for 67 years before he passed away on April 13, 2013.

When the Snell’s moved back to DeWayne’s home town of North Manchester, she took a job as a secretary and payroll clerk at Heckman’s Bindery in North Manchester. Later she worked for Farm Bureau Insurance in Wabash and then worked as a receptionist and billing department for Dr. George Balsbaugh in North Manchester. After working there for several years, she began working for Manchester High School as an audio/visual coordinator in 1966 and later retiring in 1989. During her time at Manchester High School, she attended St. Francis University for a few years.

Doris Snell and her family enjoyed traveling throughout the world. Her personal favorite place to visit and vacation were to the western U.S., Europe and Florida. When she wasn’t traveling with her family or working, she enjoyed sewing, reading, Pennsylvania Dutch cooking and entertaining family in friends in her home.

A member of Manchester Church of the Brethren, she was a spiritually strong individual that faithfully attended every Sunday with her husband and family. Doris was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter D.K., North Manchester and the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority also of North Manchester.

The loving memory of Doris B. Snell will be remember by her daughter, Marsha (Michael) Flora, Fort Wayne; four grandchildren: Darcy (David Neiman) Flora, Dillon, Colo.; Megan (James) Chappo, Prosper, Texas; Christine Gonzalez and Rachel Gonzalez both of Naperville, Ill.; one son-in-law, Robert Gonzalez, Naperville, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert F. and Mary A. Bowers; husband, E. DeWayne Snell; one daughter, Tamara Gonzalez who passed away in 2010; one brother and one sister.

Arnold L. VanLue

Arnold L. VanLue, 84, rural Roann, passed at 3:45 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, at Timbercrest Senior Living Community of North Manchester.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1933, in Fulton County, Henry Township to Myron J. and Ruth (Ratliff) Vanlue.

He married on May 17, 1953, in the Emmanuel United Methodist Church near Gilead, to Roma V. Bahney, she survives.

He was an auctioneer for many years as well as a farmer and a general contractor. Together with his wife, they raised and showed Suffolk Sheep in many states. Over the years of showing sheep they won many notable awards. He was also a wood worker and has proudly displayed his craftsmanship since 1976 at the Indiana State Fair.

He was a 1951 graduate of Akron High School. He also graduated from the Reppert Auction School of Decatur. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War. He was a member of the Emmanuel Church of Gilead. as well as the National Suffolk Sheep Association and the Indiana Auctioneer Association.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Roland W. (Sara) VanLue, Kokomo; daughter, Lila (Steven) Hammer, North Manchester; several grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and a brother-in-law, William Bahney, Boise, Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Alice and her husband Tom Caudill.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Sept. 17, at Hartzler Funeral Home 305 West Rochester Street Akron. Rev. Phil Pratt will officiate. Burial will take place in Athens Cemetery, Athens, where graveside military rites will be performed by the Fulton County Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from  2-6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 16, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron.

Katherine Paxton

Katherine E. Paxton, 101, passed at 7:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, at Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester.

She was born on Sept. 4, 1917, in Warsaw to William and Ruth K. (Hessler) Snyder.

She married on June 14, 1941, in Warsaw to James R. “Jim” Paxton. He preceded on March 19, 2014. They resided in rural Silver Lake for many years. She enjoyed gardening, animals and farm life. She was an active member of the Silver Creek Church of God for many years. Survivors include a son, Phil (and wife Suzy),Sevierville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Brent (and wife Lisa Paxton); Lichelle and (husband Josh Parker); Kevin (and wife Brittany Paxton); step grandchild, Stacy (and husband Spencer Mikel); eight great grandchildren and three step great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim Paxton, six sisters and three brothers.

The service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018 at Silver Creek Church of God 6504 W. 1300 S. Silver Lake, officiated by Pastor Thomas Craig. Burial will be at Silver Creek Cemetery, Silver Lake. Visitation hours are from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Silver Creek Church of God, Silver Lake.

Arrangements are entrusted to Hartzler Funeral Home 305 West Rochester Street, Akron.

Jack Elam

Jack Elam, 86, passed away at 10:45 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2018, at Peabody Retirement Community in North Manchester. He was formerly of Grace Village Retirement Community in Winona Lake.

He was born Jan. 29, 1932, in New Castle, to John and Rosa (Cassity) Elam. On April 29, 1952, he was married to Janet L. (Hamilton) Elam, who survives.

He was a longtime resident of Kosciusko County, where he was a member of First Christian Church of Warsaw, 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge #418 F&AM in Milford, as well as a member of the Scottish Rite of Fort Wayne, and the American Legion Post #223 in Syracuse. He proudly enlisted and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict as a Supply Sergeant. He served from Dec. 12, 1951 until his honorable discharge from the Air Force Reserve on Dec. 11, 1959, as an Airman First Class. He was also a proud direct descendant of Matoaka, known in history as Pocahantas.

He retired in 1984 from Thunander Corporation in Elkhart, where he was the National Sales Manager for 15 years. He loved his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and will be dearly missed.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Janet L. Elam, Winona Lake; daughter: Beth Yoder, Peru; and his son: Joe (Pat) Elam, New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Also surviving are three grandchildren: Brett (Daron) Elam, Marietta, Ga.; Adam (Jennifer) Yoder, Greentown; Debbie (Brian) Pinnegar, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.

Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw.

His funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home and officiated by Pastor Gary Boschain. Burial will follow with a graveside service at Syracuse Cemetery of Syracuse. Full military rites will be conducted by active members of the United States Air Force and the American Legion Post 223 of Syracuse.

Rev. Charles Richard “Dick” Stults, 86, of North Manchester, died at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, 2018, at Peabody Healthcare Center in North Manchester. He was born May 19, 1932, in Princeton, N.J. to Charles W. and Emma Lois (Gordon) Stults.

Stults was a 1949 graduate of Princeton High School, received his Bachelors of History degree from the College of Wooster in 1953, his Masters of Theology from the Princeton Theological Seminary in 1956 and was ordained in Kingston, N.J. that same year.

He married Nancy Bootman in Haddonfield, N.J. on June 16, 1956. He was a Presbyterian pastor, retiring after 41 years. Stults pastored in North Baltimore, Ohio; Califon, N.J.; Unadilla, N.Y.; Millersburg, Ohio; Newark, Ohio; Plain City, Ohio; Stalwart, Mich; Winimac; and Pulaski.

He was a member of the Presbytery of Wabash Valley, the Presbyterian Synod, and the Spiritual Life Committee at Peabody. He was also member of the Sparton Masonic Lodge in Winimac, a volunteer fireman, First Aid Squad, and a Boy Scout Leader. He enjoyed civil war history, genealogy, gardening and photography. Stults was a resident of Peabody Retirement Community since 1995.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy Stults of North Manchester; four children: John (Kathy) Stults of Emerald Hills, Calif; Kathryn (Karen) Stults of Miami; Andrew (Dominga) Stults of Columbus, Ohio; and Priscilla (George) Vallenas of Boyds, Md; four grandchildren: Michael (Faith) Stults of Redwood City, Calif.; Carolyn (Jordan) Gonzalez of South Pasadena, Calif.; Brian Vallenas of Boyds, Md.; and Janelle Stults of Columbus, Ohio; great granddaughter Gwendolyn Gonzalez of South Pasadena, Calif.; brother Robert Stults of Fort Myers, Fla.; and two sisters: Frances Voorhees of Monroe, N.J.; and Miriam (Harry) Heckler of Fort Washington, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept.r 25 at Peabody Chapel, 400 W. 7th St., North Manchester, with Rev. David Crowley officiating. Friends may call 4 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, 207 W. Main Street, North Manchester. There will be a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are Peabody Caring Circle or College of Wooster.

Randy S. Schroll, 63, North Manchester, died Aug. 24, 2018, at his home. He was born Feb. 15, 1955, in Fort Wayne, to Todd and Doris (Lefforge) Schroll.

He worked for Essex in Columbia CIty. He enjoyed tinkering and hunting.

He is survived by several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no services. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Servia at a later date. Arrangements by Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, North Manchester.

Linda K. Leeth, 77, North Manchester, passed away on Sept. 28, 2018, at Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester.

Linda K. Leeth

Born on November 19, 1940, in Bowling Green, Ohio, Leeth was one of two daughters to Arden and Chrystal (Flaugh) Leeth.

For 15 years, Leeth worked for GTE, Fort Wayne, as a purchasing agent before retiring. Leeth was an avid reader who also enjoyed crosswords, solitaire and anything having to do with England. Her dream came true when she was able to travel there. The most important thing to Leeth was her family, and her entire life revolved around them. She was a proud mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. People who knew Leeth would likely describe her as a soft and caring woman.

The loving memory of Leeth will be carried on by her three daughters, Laurie (Tim) Kahn, South Whitley, Lena (Keith) Kunkle, Peru, and Emily (Eric) Piper, Rochester; two brothers, David (Irma) Leeth, Three Rivers, Michigan and Jon (Rae Anne) Leeth Antiqua, Guatemala; one sister, Janet Broome, Atlanta, Georgia; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Lehman Cemetery, Payne, Ohio.

Jeniece E. Reckard Kester, 94, Huntington, and formerly of North Manchester, passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2018, at Parkview Huntington Hospital, Huntington.

Mrs. Kester was born Oct. 11, 1923, in Uniondale, Wells County, to Carl and Ruth (Cover) Graham. Her parents preceded her in death. She married Meredith Reckard in 1941 and he preceded her in death in 1969. Her second marriage was to Paul Kester in 1970 and he preceded her in death in 1997.

She graduated from East Union High School, Wells County. She was a member of the Congregational Christian Church in North Manchester.

She is survived by one son, Terry (Cheryl) Reckard, Huntington; one daughter, Connie Hammel, Sorrento, Fla.; six grandchildren: Christina (Darren DePuglia) Reckard, Kellina (Jon) Moore, Jamilyn (Nick) PeGan, Stacy (Alysia) Hammel, Tina (Kevin) Easterday, and Tyler (Angela) Hammel; 14 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held from 10-11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, at McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington.

Robert E. Metzger, 89, North Manchester, passed away at 12:40 p.m. on Oct. 16, 2018, at his residence. Born on Aug. 4, 1929, in Wabash County, he was one of three children born to Glenn L. and Florence N. (Brandenburg) Metzger.

After graduating from Chester High School in 1948, he married Marjorie J. Geiser on April 3, 1949. Supporting his family, he worked for Manchester University for 32 years, eventually retiring in 1993. Those who knew him described him as an excellent father, role model and devoted care giver for his wife Marjorie. He was a member of North Manchester Old German Baptist Brethren Church.

The memory of Robert E. Metzger will be carried on by his wife, Marjorie J. Metzger, North Manchester; three sons: Gerald (Gladys) Metzger, North Manchester; Dale (Aleeta) Metzger, North Manchester; and Wayne (Gayle) Metzger, Goshen; one daughter, Linda (Jeff) Bocchetto, Westfield; two daughter-in-law’s, Kathleen Metzger, Waynesboro, Penn.; and Alice Metzger, Ferrum, Va.; one brother, Marvin (Sandra) Metzger, North Manchester; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Florence Metzger; two sons, Dean A. and Lynn R. Metzger; and one brother Wayne L. Metzger.

Sheila D. Reed, 69, North Manchester, passed away at 11:25 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, at Parkview Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family and friends.

She was born at Wabash, to Juanita France on Aug. 27, 1949. On May 31, 1969, she married Richard E. “Dick” Reed, spending over 50 years of commitment to each other.

Loved by many as Cookie, she enjoyed her time with family and extended a warm-hearted welcome to everyone she met. Painting houses for 20 years, she also enjoyed karaoke singing. She was a member of Manchester Bible Church, Wabash VFW Post # 286 and the American Legion Auxiliary Post # 85 at Huntington. She was proud of her Miami Indian heritage and will be buried beside her brother in the Frances Slocum Cemetery.

Her memory will live on in her survivors: husband, Dick Reed, North Manchester; two daughters: Jodi (Erik) Roach and Heather (Craig) Walters, both of Fort Wayne; her seven grandchildren: Libbie Roach, Addison Roach, Bella Roach, Taylor Roach, Ian Winebrenner, Riley Walters, and Brenden Walters, all of Fort Wayne. And one great-grandchild, Jaxon Page. She is also survived by two brothers, Bob (Judy) Gaines Jr., Wabash; and Tony Gaines, North Manchester. One brother, Steve France, preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 2015.

Services will be held at noon, Saturday, Oct. 27, at McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester. Friends and family may call from 3-7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 26, at McKee Mortuary and one hour prior to services on Saturday. Pastor Dave Stockland will officiate and burial will follow at Frances Slocum Cemetery, Wabash County.
